HOW TO CUSTOMIZE A HYBRID PADDLE

STEP-BY-STEP SETUP

Hybrid paddles usually start with a naturally balanced feel and a mid to good sweet spot. The goal here isn’t to necessarily fix anything. It’s to enhance it by expanding the sweet spot while keeping that stock balance and plow-through intact.

SETUP RECOMMENDATION

LIGHTWEIGHT BUILD

This is my go-to starting point for most hybrid paddles.

What you’ll need:

  • Two 4g strips (cut from 1g-per-inch tape)
  • Overgrip

Placement:

  • Place each strip so about 1.5 inches covers part of the bottom corners and runs up the sides

This improves the sweet spot in a meaningful way without messing with the paddle’s natural balance. Keeping the weight just below the balance point is key. That’s how we boost twistweight and forgiveness without making the paddle feel sluggish.

What it changes:

  • Increases swingweight by ~2 points
  • Boosts twistweight by ~0.6 points

Fine-Tuning:

  • If it feels too heavy, slide the weights down about an inch
  • If it feels too light, slide them up about an inch

Small adjustments make a big difference.

Finish it off with an overgrip to keep your handle fresh and dialed in.

Why This Works:

You’ll notice an immediate bump in stability and forgiveness. It reduces mishits, improves kitchen consistency, and adds just a touch more power on drives and volleys without a big impact on maneuverability.

SETUP RECOMMENDATION

HEAVYWEIGHT BUILD

I love this build. If you can handle a little extra weight, this setup turns a hybrid into a powerhouse with widebody-level stability.

What you’ll need:

  • Two 1.5g weighted strips (from 1g-per-inch tape)
  • Two 4g weighted strips
  • One 9g Cap Coin
  • Overgrip

Placement:

  • Put the 1.5g strips at 9 and 3 o’clock
  • Place the 4g strips over the bottom corners
  • Add the Cap Coin to the base of the handle

This creates an oversized sweet spot and gives the paddle a rock-solid feel behind the ball. You’re adding head weight, but the Cap Coin offsets it so the paddle still feels quick in hand.

What it changes:

  • Increases swingweight by ~3.5 points
  • Boosts twistweight by ~0.7 points

Fine Tuning:

  • If it feels too heavy, swap the 1g-per-inch tape for 0.5g-per-inch tape
  • If it still feels too light, replace the 1.5g strips with 2.5g strips

Small adjustments make a big difference.

Finish it off with an overgrip to keep your handle fresh and dialed in.

Why This Works:

This setup gives hybrids a massive sweet spot and a real plow-through boost for drives and put-aways. The Cap Coin pulls the balance back toward your hand, minimizing the impact of the swingweight increase so the paddle can still be flicked and maneuvered well.
